The Best Compliments I Have Received From My Family

I was reflecting a few days ago on how blessed I have been in my life.  God has given me a terrific family, and I try really hard not to take them for granted.  I also realized that I have heard some terrific things from them over the years.  I pray that you get to hear this kind of stuff from your own loved ones.

COMPLIMENT #1

"You have become the man that I always knew you could be when we first met."

My wife said this to me a few months ago.  WOW!  I don't know any husbands who wouldn't enjoy hearing that.  I would be lying if I said that it made me blush, but it did make me feel truly happy and thankful.  My wife and I met when I was 20 years old - I had just finished my junior year of college.  We've been together almost half of my life.  Clearly, I have changed since those heady days, and I'm pleased that it is apparently for the better.

COMPLIMENT #2

"You are just like Grandpa.  Your parenting skills are exquisite."

I've heard this from my mom a handful of times, and it never fails to make me smile.  I have written here about my grandfather before in one of my all-time favorite posts: What makes a man a real man? Lessons from my Grandpa.  He was a very special man - he loved deeply, and he wasn't afraid to let it show.  He taught me how to be a father.  To think that I am like him is highly flattering.

COMPLIMENT #3

"You are the best dad in the world."

I have heard this from three of my four children, and the other one can't talk yet.  :)  Who am I to argue with their airtight logic?

COMPLIMENT #4

"I love you, (Dad/Jason/Son)."

Having lost a host of relatives and friends and having mourned each of them, I can state with confidence that there are few things more important than telling others that you love them.  I have no fear when it comes to expressing this, because I never want to die leaving anything unsaid or leaving any of my family wondering about my feelings.  I tell my kids and my wife that I love them daily, usually several times.  My kids know without a doubt that I love them unconditionally (which is the only real love around, in my opinion).

There is an appropriate song that just came to mind from the movie "The Bucket List".  Enjoy!

Comments

Jason, these are all lovely comments.  My sons know how much I love them as well, and I know they love me.  Of course, telling me that they are glad I am not like other more "normal" mothers is supposed to be a compliment, right?  lol!  Also, when I tell them they are just like their father, my tone might imply that this is not exactly a compliment.  But all in all, when you win the favor of small children, you are probably doing a great job!  xxoo

Susan - Yes, I suppose hearing my wife say that my kids are like me could go either way sometimes.  :)  Thanks for your kind remarks, as always.  I hope you have a stellar week!

Jason, the feelings and comments from Family are worth more than all the accolades that others may give to us. You are certainly a lucky man to have such a great Family.

Yeah Jason. These are the marks you are leaving on the ones you love. When you pass on some day hopefully far far away, the ones you love will not comment about dad being Number one at his occupation or anything that has to do with work but what they will remember is all of the things you did with them as well as all acts of kindness etc...You are a lucky man and you know it. That is Good!

That is a feel good post if I have ever seen one. Now I am going to be huniting for such compliments from my wife and kids and that isn't how it is supposed to work. Right now, my four year old placates me when I am mad at him by saying "I love you Dad".

That's awesome, Jason! It's so cool to sit, reflect and count your blessings and it sounds like you have plenty to be thankful for. Makes us realize, with thoughts like these, that though times get tough and stress rises, we're doing something right!

Keep it up!

Jason, that is what it's all about.  If we aren't putting our family first and giving them the love, security and support they need they won't love and respect us back.  Great Job.....that must mean you are a great agent too, way to go!!

Like the song "I get by with a little help from my friends" we would not survive so well without the love of our family. Great post, Jason.

Jason you truly are a blessed man to have such a wonderful and loving family.  I am sure it is just a matter of time for # 4 to follow in the footsteps of 1, 2 & 3 and remind you that you are the BEST.  After all you work hard at attaining that status...it is obvious!  Thanks for sharing these ideas that remind us to remember to pay those all important compliments to the ones we love!

Jason- if you are half as good a Dad as you seem to be on paper, you are awesome.  Best compliment I got as a parent was when my son was a senior in High school, and said when coming home from a life skills retreat, "Mom, you are the glue that holds the family together."

Gosh... the best compliment I ever received from my family was... "hey, dad... can you move you're blocking the t.v." (wait a minute, that's not a compliment, is it?)

Alan - Not so much.  At least they knew your name was "dad".  :)
