Last Sunday, my good friend Ben Finklea was here enjoying an afternoon of NFL football, when he suddenly asked me if I had heard about "Movember".
Nope. Not until that moment.
It turns out that Movember is an initiative to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer research. It involves not shaving for an entire month in an effort to grow a mustache/goatee/chin beard, etc. I have seen a lot of people talking about it this week.
I am not participating myself as a "grower", for a couple of reasons:
- I am not very good at growing facial hair, and I don't want to scare anyone. My talent is growing a nice thick neck beard. Gross.
- My wife hates me with facial hair. Enough said.
However, I did take some time to donate $20 to each of the two friends who asked, since it's a good cause and they are embarrassing themselves publicly, and who doesn't enjoy that?
Incidentally, I am either too old (or young) to have ever heard a mustache referred to as a "mo" before now. But I digress...
If you would like to donate, check out Ben's page right here:
http://us.movember.com/mospace/214457
I promised Ben that I would help to spread the word, so stop by at the link above and donate ANY amount to the cause. Even a single dollar will help.
Thanks for reading!

Jason,
I've been hiding behind the mustache for 35 years, does that count?
Working from home I some times go 3 or 4 days without shaving, I'm sure I've gone at least 30 days over the last year. does this help?
Bill
Bill - It sounds like you should have raised a whole lotta money by now, my friend.
Thanks Jason, I will check it out. Coming to Barton Creek MOnday. Have a great weekend.
Terry - THanks! Are you coming for golf?
Jason, I have donated too because thank goodness I wouldn't be able to grow one. What a great cause!
Marney - Yes, that would be less exciting, huh? :) I think it's a great cause!
When I first saw the post, I thought it must have something to do with all the moving in November to take advantage of the tax credit. It might make a good theme for another post related to that. I'm glad I can't grow a mustache too although my husband would tell you that my pregnant belly has put on quite a show in the last few months and if it keeps up, it might stand a chance to compete. :)
I'm sure there is a really good alternative name for the neck beard ... I just don't know it :) I'll have to ask around. Neard maybe?
Jason, aw shucks! I was looking forward to a post in a week or so with a picture of you with a beard!
Can I get some credit for already having a beard and moustache?
Jason,
I like yourself am going to go to the website and just donate. My loving wife is not that found of me with facial hair.
Jason,
I am sure you have just opened the door to one of our talented AR members to do a drawing rendering of you....I will have to check back!
Jason,
HEard all about this today at REBarCamp RDU! What a great ideal & a worthwhile cause. Today was outstanding. I appreciate everyone's efforts & hopefully I'll be involved for the next REBarCamp!
Nope! I have not heard of a beard or 'stache being called a mo be fo either. This is the first time that I have heard of Movember as well. I do like facial hair...
Helping you live your American dream...
Thanks Jason...I will have to check this out a bit closer
What a great cause, thanks for raising awareness about Movember. Mo? Never heard that term.
Like Marney, I'm thankful that I can't grow one.
Thanks for the link to a very worthwhile cause.
I actually got a reminder of this from @theJenATX on twitter. Totally forgot about it. I think originally I heard about it 4-5 years ago maybe. I'm like you. Can't really grow much hair, except for patches here and there... and well, no one wants to see that including me. So, I steer clear of it.
