Austin Places on Forbes Top Ten List for "America's Best Housing Markets"

Well, it appears that Texas remains one of the strongest real estate investments around, as evidenced by a new list released by Forbes.com last week.  In fact, ours was the only state to place more than one city on the list (3 total!).

Austin is #10 on their "America's Best Housing Markets" list.  For those of us who live and work here, the only surprise in this story is that we weren't at the top!  However, Houston appears at #3, and Dallas/Fort Worth is at #9 this time around.

The criteria used for this particular list were:

  • Low foreclosure rate
  • Rising home prices
  • Continued affordability for people in median income range
  • Areas without much excess inventory

To see the entire story, visit:  http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/19/best-housing-prices-personal-finance-real-estate-affordable-homes.html

Here are the top ten best housing markets for 2010 according to Forbes.com:

  1. Pittsburgh, PA
  2. Louisville, KY
  3. Houston, TX
  4. Minneapolis, MN
  5. Indianapolis, IA
  6. Memphis, TN
  7. Columbus, OH
  8. St. Louis, MO
  9. Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX
  10. Austin, TX

Jason, those can't be correct numbers. I thought Texas was taken over by Mexico 12 years ago?

Actually, congratulations.

I don't see any Florida cities there so it must be a "Hanging Chad" problem.

Maybe if I can get TLW involved we can do a re-count.

HA!  Don't forget that that TX has had a few smart governors and the taxes are kept low.

Growth of the TX economy might have some influence.

I see Houston and Dallas only beating out Austin because of the housing prices part of the equation. Austin is a tad more expensive, but I'm lovin' that part of the move!

Congratulations, Jason.  You must be proud.  Three cities in your state.  Someone is doing something right.

Ted - I think Texas is actually planning to take over the surrounding states soon.  Get it straight!  :)

Lenn - No question about it.  :)

Donna - I agree 100%.

Jane - It certainly appears that way, huh?

Great news for the entire state.  Three in the top ten is pretty good.

Jason - I'm proud that 3 Texas cities made the top ten.  It appears others are finding out what we already know about our great state!

Great stuff Jason! You definitely live in one of the most desirable areas in our great country.

Jason,

Excellent!  If I wasn't so happy living and working here in Northern Virginia, I'd consider giving Austin a try.

By the way, it seems that Austin makes just about every list I ever see when it comes to real estate.

Jason, am surprised by the Minneapolis listing.  Get 30 miles out and it falls pretty flat.

Jason,

Texas with three cities in the top ten is a real coup.

Hi Jason... With Houston, Dallas AND Austin on the list, I would say things are looking good for The Lone Star State!

Jason...

As you can see, Atlanta is not on the list, and we have the foreclosures to prove it.

Jason - It's great to see Texas with 3 cities in the top ten.  You're doing something right down there with the housing market and the economy.

I remember the good ole days when Portland would be on that list, but with unemployment and hire taxes, even at times, I'm not sure I want to live here.

Houston's moved up hasn't it? Or was it Austin you last reported? It seems like one of those was on the list, but further down. Am I remembering correctly?

Posted by Lisa Hill (Daytona Beach Real Estate) (Florida Property Experts) almost 2 years ago

Lisa - I'm honestly not sure.  I'd have to find last year's list to know for sure.  I think Donna is right with her comment above - the prices are higher here than either Houston or Dallas, which may explain why Austin isn't higher up.   :)

I guess Austin is the place to be.

Jason that is terrific news, key to such success is being afford for the median salary range coupled with low taxes.  In the Northeast taxes alone will keep us off the list.

I visited Austin for the first time last fall and fell in love. I had heard that the market stayed steady in Austin and San Antonio - but guess that San Antonio didn't make the cut. Great post!

Pittsburg is number one? Good grief! Should we expect more rude Steelers fans than usual in Baltimore when they play the Ravens?

It is a blessing to be here in the Lone Star State for sure! We have some exciting stuff going on in our little neck of the woods too. Should pay off over the next 10 years big time.
