I have been working from home most days lately, which is a real blessing in my opinion. I could go to the office, but many days my work involves catching up on emails and perhaps a few phone calls (and blogging, too, of course). As a result, I often get my writing inspriration by watching or playing with my children or from some conversation with my wife.
Tonight, I noticed that my six-year old daughter was in the upstairs bathroom playing in the sink area, since I can see that room from the place where I typically blog. She was kind of quiet, so I went to see what she was doing. As I approached, she was energetically smearing lathered up soap all over the counter. She looked like a master artist, perhaps Pollock?
I asked her if she was planning to clean it up, and she said that she would. I then asked her about how her very first piano lesson went, since it was today. I have not seen a child that excited in awhile. She began energetically jumping up and down, and she yelled, "It was great, great, great! I loved it!"
My daughter's enthusiasm for the simple joy of soap suds and the absolute joy that she shared with me over the piano lesson inspired me to write this post.
I have been in real estate almost eleven years now, which seems hard to believe sometimes. At any rate, I realized that when I started, I used to get listings just from being hungry and excited about selling homes. I don't know when that stopped being the case, but I don't feel that fire in my belly nearly as often. Maybe this comes simply from being a veteran of this industry, but something tells me that I could do better.
I am not leaving it at that. This is just a starting point for me.
If you follow my blog, you know that I have a lot on my plate right now. Even with that in mind, I am planning to take a fresh look and a fresh approach to my business and my career starting today:
- I am going to treat EVERY lead with care, even the ones that are not thrilling.
- I am going to stop procrastinating when it comes to follow up with past clients.
- I am going to seek that energy that I had in 1997, when I was geared up everyday and anxious to sell something to somebody.
- Clients will sense this in me and they will look forward to working with me, and ONLY me.
- I am planning to treat every day as important - I don't ever get one back. Once it is gone, it's gone.
Every day that we are here is important, and every day should be treated as such. I have a friend who is very sick right now, and if he can bear it out and make his life count, then I have nothing to complain about, and I should be squeezing the most from every single minute of this life.
I have my health, a beautiful wife, awesome kids, enough money to keep my head above water, my own business, freedom to choose how I spend my day, and the list goes on and on. I need to be jumping up and down! I am going to make it....playful.
This business is unique in so many ways, and I truly feel that this is where God wants me right now. I can look back and see jobs and experiences that I had as a younger man that ultimately all served to prepare me for this moment in time. I feel like my skills and my personality are perfect for real estate, and I am uniquely talented as a salesperson and as a broker, teacher, and manager. I am not bragging here - just evaluating. My real point is: I can do better with the gifts I have been given.
This may sound odd to you, but since I started blogging (about three months ago), I have been better able to express myself to my friends and clients. I was already okay in that department with my family, but writing is a kind of catharsis that allows me to organize my thoughts sometimes. Consequently, I have seen a benefit when dealing with issues of everyday life. I feel more centered, and I feel accepted. This may be a bit melodramatic, but I assure you that it's genuine. I plan to use this newfound gift of communication.
Where am I going with this? Check back with me sometime in the upcoming months. You might just find that I have become a new man.

I make it my business to mentor newbies to the industry. Not only is this an opportunity to give back to a business that has given me so much (and I am not talking about $), it keeps me fresh...it keeps me excited...it keeps me positive.
You are so right...there is nothing like that new feeling; however, the passion for this business has never left me.
Jason,
Kids have their way of letting us know when we start taking things for granted, huh buddy? The first step is recognizing it!
Jason - you are such an inspiration. Thanks for being so open and transparent so we can be blessed by your gifts and talents. We have to appreciate each moment and those around us everyday and Thank God for our lives and the freedom it gives us.
I am SO happy for your daughter that she also has a Father who understands intrinsically that she is experiencing joy and exercising her sense of artistry. I had that same Father, and because of him, and the way he worked to fan my inner fire without judgement; I am more whole, more alive and more amazing. So, too, will be your beautiful little girl.
Proud, strong daughter of Loveseat.
Jason - many times I have asked myself what else I could be doing that provides a routine paycheck. Something a little more secure and less temperamental. Each and every time I get the same answer - not a thing.
Due to some personal health issues I would not last in a corporate world, so it is better for me to do what I do, love what I do and enjoy the people I do it for and with.
When we write from our hearts, work from our hearts and speak with our hearts ... well, it's an unspoken level of success that many strive to achieve but never attain.
Thanks for a most inspiring post.
I know exactly how you feel. I can honestly say that AR has helped me begin to recapture that feeling that I used to have as a Rookie. Back when Jason and I would jump up and down over a new listing. I've gotten way to comfortable....and I don't like it.
Somethings are being shaken up for me now (Will post about it later on) by others. This could be a real challenge for me and Jason. Challenges and people saying "we couldn't" is what motivated us to go out and try.
I want to be like Paul, I want to be able say that I have fought the good fight!
BRIAN - I actually have shared an awful lot of them, especially in my early posts:
http://activerain.com/blogs/jasoncrouch/archives/2007/08
I guarantee that you can find some war stories there.
JENNIFER - It's interesting that you managed to pick up on that. She actually really enjoys art (both creating and simply looking at it), and I would not at all be surprised if she is an artist when she gets older. I take that back - she is ALREADY an artist, but I wouldn't be surprised if this continues. I try to encourage this stuff as much as I can. I think I am doing a pretty good job so far. Thanks for your comments, my friend. Let's talk sometime soon. Maybe my nickname should just be "Dad".
Jason, I love this attitude adjustment that you are experiencing. And you are darn right that your clients, your family, and everyone around you will notice and you'll be the better for it. I've seen my wife go through this same stage of losing and regaining the rookie enthusiasm after 10 years of teaching dance lessons. It's wonderful to hear about your impassioned and renewed vigor.
Someone's been taking their vitamins! Maybe this will be the time for you to run that marathon we spoke about?
Noted. And in the book.
Let's talk. I really need it.MWA!!!
APPLAUSE!!! APPLAUSE!! I think SO many people need to read this post- I know I needed it today. REALLY, really needed it. I love what you said:
"I am planning to treat every day as important - I don't ever get one back. Once it is gone, it's gone. "
True words of wisdom!! This is very inspirational. Thanks Mr. Crouch!
Jason,
I am absoluetly ecstatic for you. I am also Envious! but I know it's not okay to be green with Envy. You have laid out a perfect example of how this Business can be the greatest, more time for Family. I need more myself.
Take Care,
Tom Weiss
Jason - I completely understand the power of being able to express yourself in writing, which AR provides a wonderful platform for. I would have been surprised a short few months ago that it will have such an effect on me. I am usually not a mushy type and was not in a habit of "sharing with strangers". I am actually not trying to recreate the past "fire in my belly". I am not sure I can. Each stage of life brings it's own "fires" - I just want to make sure to enjoy the feeling.
Beautifully written post.
Jason, Bravo! For your new attitude and for this post. Good luck.
Actually, all the stimulation on AR makes me feel guilty for not doing enough.

Jason
Nicely written, I sometimes wonder where all the enthusiasm has gone? I think the more experienced someone gets in the business the more confident they feel and rather than being rah rah we get down to business at hand. We are enthusiastic but sometime don'yt show it often enough.
I'm with you we must stimulate ourselves to be upbeat at all time. After all the world is just a stage!
Jason, thanks for the inspiring post, always great reading. I delighted in the joyfulness of your child and the piano lessons, if we could only keep that enthusiam everyday :) how inspiring children are and they way they teach us.
Jason, thank you for sharing this today. It was a message that I really needed at this point in time. I am grateful every day for all that I have, and I love my career. We have remodeled our home office, so like you I've been staying home and working more...and I'm finding that I have been way more productive. Even so, I needed that reminder to look at my career with the excitement that I had when I started 4 years ago.
I think I might just print out your post and have it handy so that I can read it whenever and wherever I need a shot of inspiration. Thanks again!
Crouch
A true professional is very introspective as you are. Now more than ever, it is evident that the strong will survive. Your message to reclaim your 'rookie status' is all about proving yourself!! Great message....wow, I really miss it here in the last week or so.
Jason.... well done my friend. And no exclamation point or question mark... ;o) Seriously though, it's funny, because I was just thinking about this myself. But I always forget to form these thoughts into a blog, until someone as yourself does this. You have a great way of expressing yourself on here and it's easy to read.
Overall, I could relate to much of what you said. I guess after 15 yrs for myself, sometimes my mood is just because of the market. What I have realized in the last 3 months is that I need to revisit the idea of taking a fresh look at my business once a month. I am now going to do this between the 2nd and 5th of each month. thanks for sharing this.
Jason, thank you for picking me up AGAIN! These last few days have been lived with a big black cloud overhead. I've felt overwhelmed and stressed out. Then I get frustrated thinking what the heck am I doing thinking I'm overwhelmed, when there is a family I know who is watching their son/brother struggle for life. Watching someone go through a real struggle really does put things in perspective. PRAYERS ARE WORKING! Keep them coming! We thought all was lost last night (pneumonia), but he is stable this morning.
AR has really made me feel excited and positive about building my business. I'm thinking that this may be a direction that I am really good at. Your wonderful welcome, through your comments and concern, have made all the difference. That may be a little strange to say, because truly, we just met!
Thank you for this bright and encouraging post. Thank you for sharing your self. Positive, positive thoughts!
Hi Jason: I really enjoyed your blog and the way you talked about your little girl. Real Estate is a great business because you can work out of your home and be with your family more than other careers. I am new to this business and I am also having a hard time keeping "the fire burning." I find that when I interact with other realtors, I get more excited and get some good ideas, I do more. Blogging is new to me but I am beginning to see the value of reading and interacting with other agents to get support with staying in the game. I admire your outlook on the future and you sound like a really great Dad. Good luck to you.

Jason,
I wanted to give you a quick reply to say that your blog has got me thinking about my own situation. I seem to go in cycles. I get fired up like you seem to be and then in a few weeks it wains and I am back to my old bad habits. The new year is always a good example. That seems to be the time when everyone recommits. I have yet to do a lot of blogging so I am taking a hint from you and several other responders and I will see if consistant blogging keeps the fire burning.
Nice blog and keep up the good work.
BRIAN - Thanks for your apt comments. It is interesting to hear that your wife went through something very similar around the 10-year mark also. Maybe it's the "10 year itch"? Thanks for being the first to let me know that this post was featured. It was good chatting with you earlier. I hope you have a great Wednesday, my friend.
As for the vitamins, I actually need to start taking them again. The marathon idea is exciting to me - worth thinking about.
Jason, It is difficult to keep the fire burning after so many years. Especially with the market the way it is right now. I just have a hard time getting excited by listings anymore. Unless they are really special it's just another seller I have to call 4 times a week to let them know the market sucks and I'm doing my best. BUT got to do it. I have to get up everyday and find the motivation to go to work.
I agree participating on AR helps. It has helped me to really explore what it is I do and how I do it. I feel rejuvenated in my career. It's all good!!!
And this was a well deserved feature!
Another great post. I took time-out yesterday and just jumped on the trampoline with my younger daughter yesterday! Not an easy task for a "big-boned" boy like myself! But spending 15 minutes with her brought back many memories of "simpler" times! Keep on blogging Jason, your an inspiration!
Jason,
Thanks for reminding us that attitude is everything. The key is keeping it in the midst of adversity. The real challenge is to have faith and knowing that as a humans, we can persevere, triumph, and strive to be better. Our thoughts and free will allow us to choose right from wrong, and steer our emotions in ways that help others and better ourselves in the process. Keep up the good work!
DEBBIE - I completely agree. I have learned enough from my kids to fill several volumes, and the oldest is only eight right now. Thanks for the compliment - have a great day!
SARDI - Rocky II is an excellent example. I love all of the Rocky movies, even the ones that the critics hated. I can't hear this without feeling excited and motivated:

Thanks for your great comments, my friend.
Funny thing, I have also been in the real estate business for 11 years. I was just driving home from the office and thinking about Thanksgiveing coming up next week. I was also going over things to be thankful for. You are so right that we need to regain the enthusiasm that we had when we started or better yet as a child. Children are so excited about things like lessons and bubbles, they probably laugh 10 or 15 times the amount of times that we do in a day, and often enjoy simple things like playing with pots and pans instead of large tag items.
I too am thankful for my family, the flexibility in my busness, a roof over my head, food on the table, and God for all that and allowing me to be born in the United States!
With all that going for us, there is nothing stopping us except for ourselves. Let's turn the confidence in it around. It really is not as bad out there as the press makes it seem
PAM - First of all, you must be pretty cool, because that is also my wife's name. Secondly, if you enjoy reading about kid stuff, you should consider joining my group Family Ties:
http://activerain.com/groups/familyties
You might also want to look back through some of my past posts or consider subscribing to my blog if you haven't already, since I talk about my kids a lot on here. Here's a recent example:
Human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria! - LIFE WITH A TODDLER
I love your post... I know hat God has blessed you and your family that your able to stay at home with your little one... After reading your post I know that what ever you decide to do will be of a great success.
take care and keep your family on top......
Jason - I like the premise of your post. We were just talking to a Title Rep today about how new agents work so hard at prospecting and how seasoned agents sometimes forget what that is. The best point that you made was sounding excited when talking to people. An excited attitude will breed better business.
Hey Jason,
Great job, I loved this post. Your enthusiasm comes through loud and clear, congratulations.
Such a great post!!!
The post really made me start to think...
I have been in such a slump.
Oh! Thank you again,
Jeanette Hemmer Johnson County, Arkansas
You're not only fighting the "good fight" you're throwing UPPER CUTS! Just don't bite any ears off...k?
Make sure she never misses a piano lesson...It was my outlet for frustration...my entire childhood. I loved it. I was the accompanist for my middle and high school choir. No one believed I could do it in 8th grade...by Senior high, I was playing both the organ and the piano (flute, guitar as well)...
I know this was not the point of your blog, but...the rewards of music for a child are so rewarding...the rewards for your post are as well...great post....
MOHAMED - I could not agree more with you. That is the perfect attitude right now.
MICHAEL - Thanks for your enthusiasm. I am so pleased that you liked it so much.
PAUL - I am so tempted to use the other phrase that I am looking to bring back, but I will refrain, since this is a public post.
Jason, Awesome. I am a rookie, and have been a little nervous about the whole "real estate boom" but you know only the strong will survive and like I've said before I will be right next to all you standing tall. I also have an 8 yr. old daughter that inspires me every single day. Thanks for your blog, it made my day.
Sorry, I'm a rookie I didnt leave my name.
Ruth
Jason,
What an inspirational story!! I'm doing the week in review this week and this is a must for this week's post.
Great job.
Awesome Post Jason !-We agree ..the Joy is in the journey, not the results...My Jeff always says he never feels like he gets up to Work:) ( we've been doing this since 99 -similar to you!) working from home does help stay positive!
Continued prayers for your family & Mother in Law
Take care
Grace Safrin
What a refreshing post! Don't kids just give you a great appreciation for things. They notice the little things and we need to take after them sometimes more than they need to take after us. My children inspire me every day. Keep up with your rookie motivation and good luck.
Todd Jones - Your Scranton, Clarks Summit, Realtor.
JUDY - Thanks for your compliments, and I hope you are able to use your enthusiasm to begin a new chapter today! Also, I appreciate the permission not to respond to your comment, but I might as well, right? Have a terrific week!
Jason-Another great post to bring a smile to my face. Your little girl sounds absolutely adorable. Isn't it amazing what we can learn from our own children. I often times think that God blesses us with our children so that we will wake up and listen to Him.
I'm glad you are seeking that spark that you are wanting in your business. I'm sure you will find it in no time. It will be very inspirational to read up on your success.
JONI - Thanks for your solidly nice comments. I appreciate them so much, and I hope to make good use of this self-evaluation time. Have a great weekend!
MARIA - Thanks for reading and commenting on this one. I am happy that you found it helpful. Have a great Friday!
Considering how rapidly technology is advancing, we're all rookies right now to some degree. We may have the experience and systems in place to perform well for our clients, but the first battle is generating leads. And that's where blogging is a great tool. Like you mentioned, it helps us to clarify our thoughts, share ideas and connect with others -- and when done well it makes us all better.
Jason, welcome and Happy Thanksgiving. Lupe
I like claiming back your enthusiasm. I find that there are many time wasters that can distract us in this industry (emails, interruptions, etc.). I like to review my emails for a few minutes during the day and then late at night. During the day I'd suggest getting on the phone and in front of clients. We only ring the cash register when we are in front of clients and prospects. The rest can be delegated.
STEVEN - This is a terrific point. Direct contact with clients and prospects is the only way that we make any actual money. Thanks for your spot-on remarks. Have a great Thanksgiving!
MELISSA - I am glad you liked it so much. I am happy to share stuff like this if it is helpful. This one seemed to resound quite a bit with readers. Have a terrific Thanksgiving!
Imagine the feeling on Christmas morning
as I spied all those presents under the tree
What surpises awaited, what joy it would bring
Cause I knew each of them was for me.
If I could bottle that glee
If I could hold on to that joy
If I could regain the feeling
I got from each and every toy
Then what success could I find
What goals could I achieve
No could stop me
I would always be happy
Then something happened
An event I did not forsee
It would change me forever
Like a light that would always shine on me
He was 8lbs 6 ozs, my bundle of joy
I would do anything for my little boy
So there you have it,
When I need to find my joy
I rush hone to my family and
I play ball with my little boy
It's no Frost or Whitman or even Suess for that matter but I sat doen this morning and your post insired me and it kind of just jumped out.
Hello Jason, I love you and all of your blogs. Thanks for giving them to "ME". I am very blessed. Thanks for sparking me up again. God Bless
I am just now reading this and wow, it does hit the spot right now doesn't it?? Thanks for putting into words the thoughts that many of us have had and probably still need to act on. Oh, how things were in the beginning.... (96 for me) Even though we can't go back, we can refocus our insights for sure. Thanks again for a great post!
SONYA - Sorry I missed your comment back in February. Thanks for your kind remarks - that's awesome.
STACY - Glad you enjoyed this one. I should probably read it once a week.
Jason, I teach the real estate licensing courses at Penn State Schuylkill, and have found that it rekindled in me the kind of enthusiasm you're describing. Seeing the business through a newbie's eyes is fascinating, and energizing. You see so many things we do every day, because we always do them that way, with a fresh view. In my last class, there was one young man who is now a full time realtor in another area (just bordering our region) and I've been mentoring him the past few months. We're even doing a deal together now, and I love it. I love teaching/mentoring.
ERICA - That is terrific to hear. I have hired a few new (and newer) agents this year, and I look forward to mentoring them as well. Thanks for stopping by!
This blog says it all! We all seem to get lazy about doing certain things and gearing up and getting our butts moving would make all the difference in the world. Thanks for your insight!
We learn so much from children. They help us find the inner child within ourselves. It looks like you are finding your core and your voice and I will stay tuned... it looks like great things are going to come your way!
So, it's 10 months later. How's the enthusiasm? I hope you were able to keep it up. I find using my kids for inspiration for enthusiasm works so well. They get excited about so many things.
So, it's 10 months later. How's the enthusiasm? I hope you were able to keep it up. I find using my kids for inspiration for enthusiasm works so well. They get excited about so many things.
CHRISTINE - Actually, it's still pretty good. I am a realistic optimist, if that makes any sense at all. We have had a far better year than most of my colleagues, so I feel blessed.
I do think that blogging can inspire one to be better...at everything, not just your real estate career...writers are creative and creative people seem to have outlets in their life opening all the time...there is no end to what you can do and that is where the inspiration comes from...
Thank you for uplifting my heart. God is good and I know my gifts are well above most. I do not want to take another day for granted.
You go dude, I think sometimes I lose it too. There's a lot of inspiration in this blog thanks for sharing.

Good evening Jason,
That's natural. Repetition is the enemy of enthusiasm. One thing that might help rekindle your enthusiasm is the fact that, in our changing economic climate, consumers need professional advice regarding their real estate choices and also their mortgages. Honest, informed people like you are needed now more than ever. In fact, I ran into a unusual question about mortgages today and the first person I thought about asking was you.
Sincerely,
Bruce
Alright I just started 3 days agao and to think your one post got 2080 comments...I had to say holy ---!...I love how you put links to your past bogs to get more hits...were do you find time to sell with all this blogging? I subscribed to your blogs and will use you as my guru...Thanks in advance.
