More Kid Fun at Our House - My Toddler is a "Monk" Fan Now

My children continue to provide a source of entertainment and joy in my life.  I feel blessed beyond measure to be their dad.  Recently, our toddler, Abby, who will 22 months old soon, has coined a few new phrases that I find funny.

"I want pick up my Abby".  This is self-explanatory, I suppose, and she is really just mimicking what we say ("I'm gonna pick up my Abby.")

"We wow." =  "Right now", as in "I want carry Abby we wow." or "I want to see Dora we wow."

Lately, I have noticed an interesting new trend.  I am a fan of the TV show "Monk", and when I watch it, Abby says, "See man."  Tony Shalhoub is the star of the show, and anytime he appears on the screen, she says, "man" or "see man".

Surprisingly, earlier she actually REQUESTED to watch "Monk":

"I wanna see man."

Alright, honey.  Let's see the man.  It is easier for me to watch than some of the other shows that she enjoys (please see my previous post about "Caillou" here - My Toddler Daughter's Current Favorite Show ).

Speaking of Caillou, please allow me to give you a bit of background information so that this next part will make more sense to you.  The primary kid characters on the show are Caillou, Rosie, their friend Sarah, and another friend, Leo.

Here is the verbal progression that Abby has gone through in asking to watch this show (in other words, this is how she has referred to the show over time):

  • Tattoo
  • Tai-too
  • Caillou
  • Caillou-Rosie
  • Cai-Rosie
  • Rosie
  • Sarah

She basically will just ask for random characters from the program, so it is required that we remain well-versed on the cast.  You will notice that Leo has never made the list yet.  Perhaps it's because he is kind of a dork, or maybe it's the fact that he is a minor character.

Truly, I feel that parenting is sort of like "Jeopardy" sometimes:

ME: Alex, I'll take "Characters from Caillou" for 400.

ALEX TREBEK: This two-year old girl is Caillou's little sister, and your daughter idolizes her.

ME: Who is Rosie?

ALEX: That's correct.  Your next selection?

ME: "Picky Eaters" for 600, Alex.

ALEX: This type of food makes your son run screaming into the night.

ME: What is a vegetable?

On another note, the most recent phase for Abby is the refusal to remove her shoes or jacket, even at bedtime.  She prefers to wear a hooded jacket (with the hood up) and her nice brown shoes for some reason, regardless of the time of day.

When we try to coax her into removing her shoes, it is necessary to provide a great and extended distraction, or she will get pretty upset.  With that in mind, she wears her shoes pretty often, as you might well imagine.

Right now, we are watching "Monk" together while my wife is out shopping.  I am wearing shorts and a t-shirt.  Abby is wearing a pink fuzzy hoodie with butterflies on it, along with her diaper and brown shoes.  Big surprise, huh?

GINGER - Thank you.  She is exceptionally cute!

KATERINA - That's funny to think about.  I know some kids like that, too!

JENNIFER - Yes, Ray Slaybaugh is a very genial host.  He has an avuncular style that my kids respond to very well.

Jason, your daughter has good taste.  I'm a Monk fan myself although I have to watch when my husband is away as Monk drives him NUTS.

What a great post! My kids are 19 and 15 now and wow did that go fast. I remember when we could not wait for them to do all the cool new things they are suppose to do as they are growing. A friend of ours once told us "when they are little you can't wait for them to walk and talk and then when they get older you just want them to sit down and be quiet." I am here to tell you he was right.

Truth be told we have had soooo much fun with our kids over the years just watching them grow up. We are still enjoying them. Every age, every stage has it's own specialness. Enjoy Jason. Before you know it they will be off to college like our son did this past year.

Have Fun!!

"Potent Potables", indeed.  I think there may be something wrong with Paul's medulla oblongata.

I used to wonder how my mom was so good at Jeopardy.  Eventually, I figured out that dad must be feeding her the answers.

Seriously, she was stealing money from our household by not going on that show.

Jason,

Great post! When my now 6 year old granddaughter Mikaela was Abby's age, she played with identical twin sisters, Sara and Rachel...she couldn't tell them apart, so she referred to them as Sarachel, as if they were one person! Funny stuff! Thanks,   Fran

PAUL - Your mother was neglectful, plain and simple.

FRAN - That is exactly the same thing that Abby is doing.  My other kids are Brandon and Aleah, but to her (sometimes) they are "Aleahbrandon".

Jason, I miss those days when they were small and had all those cute sayings.  Now, I've just got the non-French speaker :)

OK Jason - using the ramblings of your infant daughter as an excuse to watch Monk is really below the belt. I can't believe your wife bought that!! *lol* You do know that she wants to see her grandma right? "i want to see nan". uh huh. I've got kids....and grand kids!!

Jason, I miss the days of made up funnies from the little ones... Nothing in the world like it:-) thx for sharing...  We just watched a few really old videos starring our now second-grader-mulch-eater, and there was one 20 minute monologues devoted to a porcupine stealing his baseball... It is so weird, considering that at the time he had no exposure whatsover to either porcupines or baseballs... Weird their little brains are:-)

Jason, Kids are so funny.  My oldest son used to call a "dog" a "gee-dog" (he had the syllables backwards because we would say doggie).  My youngest used to call "donuts"  "doo-dah's" (I have no idea where he got that).  Thanks for sharing and bringing back memories.

Jason,

Funny post.  Kids do say the darndest things.  In regards to your choice of shows.... LOVE Monk!  We liked when he played the character on Wings and really enjoy his show when we get the chance to watch. Caillou.... our kids never really watched that much.... they were more into Blues Clues and Sagwa.  (Anything with animals).  Now... they watch Hannah Montana.  I'm learning all of the characters too.

Jason, thanks for the wonderful read. I did enjoy it so much. I love the "shoes" preference. Kids are so incredibly wonderful at this age and most ages. I remember this age as being particularly sweet. The writing provided a visual picture that was sweet of you and your precious Abby together watching "Monk" complete with dress code description. Nice work. I am off to a better day today, for sure. Thanks Jason!

I love telling my kids what they used to say when they were younger... I wish I would have written it all down, instead I remember things here and there... Or watch their videos..

Again, Master Blogger.. you are the best..... :)

Jason, this is great. I enjoyed reading about this. I especially like the analogy with Jeopardy. Sometimes I feel like that with my customers.

JASON - Did I read this correctly?  You were watching Monk with Abby and wearing a pink fuzzy hoodie with butterflies on it, along with a diaper and brown shoes?  That sounds like an odd parenting outfit.
Posted by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTOR® (Westcott Group Real Estate Company) over 4 years ago

LISA - I will always remember the story about your daughter's French class.  Good stuff!  That seems to sum up the essence of parenting teenagers.

SIMON - You caught me.  I actually just interrupt her when she says, "I want..."  and I exclaim "MONK!  You want to see Monk, right?  Baby loves Monk!"

INNA - I love that story.  I love when our kids bring up something completely out of left field like that.  Thanks for stopping by!

JENNIFER - The first way makes you sound a bit cannibalistic, while the second one sounds as though you are laughing AT Paul's brain.  Either way is fine with me.  By the way, Tana gave me a NEW nickname, too (Master Blogger).  How many are there now?

ELAINE - It's funny - I like beemato sauce but not slices of beemato.

ROBERTA - We have had some words like that around our house, too, such as the time that my son was asking for "Squarebob Spongepants".

DAN - I try to give her a big hug EVERY day.  It goes by very quickly.

MARTIN - It's funny that you mentioned "Wings", since I just watched an episode with Tim Daly as the guest star.  I have a feeling that you and I are very similar in our parenting style.

JEANEAN - I am happy to oblige.  It sounds like yesterday was a bit negative.  Thanks for checking this one out!

TANA - Thanks so much for your kind compliment.  I will do my best to continue to live up to the title.  Have a great day!

ALAN - Thanks for being the first person to mention the Jeopardy part.  I liked it, too!

DANNY - I am glad you enjoyed that part.  It just came to me while I was composing the post.  Have a good one -

ADAM - Yes, I like to REALLY relax while I am hanging out at home.

Crouch - I've heard wonderful things about that show...never watched it myself.  I agree with Mike, Jeopardy reminds me of several dealing I've had with clients and fellow Professionals.

SARDI - I don't watch a ton of TV, but I do enjoy that show.  The main character is quite endearing and it's an interesting concept.  I would recommend checking it out on Netflix if you have that, or just watch the reruns on USA.  As for Jeopardy, I must agree - it is important to know your clients intimately sometimes.

GRACE - It has really become one of my favorite shows.  Kids are unpredictable with their tastes, aren't they?

My 5-year old son loves Monk and would rather watch that than kid shows.  I'm not sure how much he understands about the plot, and I quickly change the channel if there's any violent parts (sometimes there are in the beginning, and sometimes they show or discuss the murder or the body).  We used to let the kids watch the Simpsons when they were too young to catch on, but now its banned when the kids are around.  Overall, adult shows for kids is a bad idea.  That being said, what are you going to do? I mean really.  Kid shows can drive you NUTS!!!!!  "Caillou" is one song that pops immediately into my head upon first morning consciousness.  And Oobie!  That show is just bizarre!  I could go on and on about weird kid shows . . .
