Forbes.com has named Austin as having the second cleanest tap water in the U.S. in its recent study of the largest metro areas. Des Moines, Iowa was rated #1. The study covered 77 MSAs (Metropolitan Statistical Areas) across the country.
The ratings were based on several factors:
- cloudiness of water (turbidity)
- bacteria
- haloacetic acids
- lead
The Austin-San Marcos area showed some of the lowest levels of lead, turbidity and haloacetic acid.

Jason, would you mind sending me a bottle of tap water? Northern Virginia water is not so bad, but a few years ago in D.C. there was a scare about lead in the water. I remember being at a restaurant and the waiter offering water before the meal by joking "Leaded or Unleaded?" (i.e., tap water or bottled water!)
BRIAN - Maybe this is a new cottage industry that I can start - "Austin's Finest Tap" or something similar. I like the "Leaded or Unleaded" comment. Good stuff -
Jason, Your water must be better than ours over here. Ever since moving here I have started buying bottle water because I think our water taste funny. I have no idea how safe it is but it just doesn't pass the taste test.
Jason - Goes to show how important it is to know whats in your drinking water. They closed the lab in N.B. and now I no longer do well sampling. So many people in the county have their own well and have no idea whats coming out of the tap, or any contamination that may be lurking. (not good).
Good news for Austin.
