Our Date Night at the Round Rock Tokyo Steak House

My wife and I have been blessed lately to have a built-in babysitter of sorts.  My mother-in-law lives with us and she has a helper who comes for about 30 hours per week.  The kids love her, so she often stays late, enabling us to have a "date night".

Wednesday night, we made our first outing to the Round Rock location of Tokyo Steak House & Sushi Bar.  We usually have the kids with us when we go out to eat, and the thought of having teppanyaki cuisine (grilled in front of you) and an active two-year old girl just don't mix well in my mind.

I have always been a fan of Japanese food, ever since our honeymoon, which I think was my first experience with teppanyaki.  Somehow, the food seems to taste better and it seems more fresh when you watch it being prepared.

We were seated by ourselves at first, then two other couples joined us at the trademark U-shaped bar surrounding the large grill.  The decor was very tasteful and rich, with great lighting.

I ordered the sirloin and chicken, and my wife had the salmon.  All of the dishes came with a light soup, shrimp appetizer, your choice of rice (I think the fried rice was $2 extra), mixed vegetables, and a small ice cream dessert.

Everything was delicious, and I didn't feel overly full or wanting for more.  We didn't try the sushi during this visit, but I would imagine that everything is meticulously prepared, based on our visit.

Our chef was talented, as they usually are, and my wife commented that it was like watching a "little food circus".  Eggs were rolling around, stuff was getting flipped in the air, there was a VERY large flame at one point, and he made a cool onion volcano with steam pouring out of the top.

For our budget, this will likely be a special-occasion restaurant, although it wasn't really that expensive.  Mine was around $22, and I think my wife's was $17.  Our total tab was about $47 pre-tip.  I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are a Round Rock resident, or if you are just in town visiting.  They are located behind the Red Lobster and Logan's in the La Frontera Shopping Center.

You can visit their website for more details, and for a look at their menu:

Jason, sounds like a fun time.  We have a similar place nearby called Hana Tokyo and it's always fun to see that onion volcano!  They must train these guys at the same place.

By the way, where did you go on your honeymoon?

Jason, It is always good to have a night out just with the two of you.  And a nice post for Localism.  AJ

Jason, I to enjoy going to a nice teppanyaki grill.  I would have had the sushi in addition to the meal even tho the wife would not join me.

Very nice localism post and thank you for sharing your evening with us.

I love Hibachi style food!  The mayo sauce is so good! You need to post this in the food group....I made fried rice & teriyaki chicken for lunch today.  You would be surprised how really simple & easy it is to make!

BRIAN - Went to St. Lucia for our honeymoon, although we ended up going about three years after we were married.

AJ - Thanks!  Yes, it was a great evening.  We went to our favorite hangout afterwards, which is Half Price Books.

DON - I am not a sushi fan, nor is my wife, so that wasn't part of our plan for the evening.  Thanks for your comments!

JEREMY - I didn't know that there was a food group!

Another date night!  You should ask your local newspaper if you can be their 'entertainment blogger' as well since you seem to know all the best restaurants and shows in town....You could call it "Late Night Date Night by Jason"  :-)

Liz - I feel really blessed to have had regular date nights lately for the first time in ages.  Since our kids are homeschooled, my wife really doesn't get many breaks away from the kids.

Jason, Yummy..you are making me hungry! I love a great Japanese Steakhouse. So much fun, and great food. I think it is wonderful that you and your wife can have a date night. That is so important for both of you! I hope you can "date" each other more often in the future!

JASON - I love going to Japanese steakhouses, but I rarely go because we don't have the built-in sitter, and they are kind of pricy compared to other restaurants the we enjoy.  This place sounds great though.

Your kids are homeschooled!  Wow that always impresses me - quite a few people on here do that or have wives that do that - it seems - no doubt the 'date nights' are well deserved!  :-)
