I have written a good number of posts about my kids and their sense of humor and unique wisdom. Over the past couple of weeks, each of them has had a memorable quote or two that I wanted to share with you.
We were watching the 1982 musical "Annie" with the kids the other night. We have this new device that Netflix sells that allows us to select movies online and stream them directly to the TV in our media room. I was browsing for something that we could all watch, and my wife spotted it and thought the kids would enjoy the movie. It probably wouldn't have been my very first choice, but it's a cute story.
About halfway through the show, Brandon turned to us and said, "I think this is a rags to riches to 'right-in-between' story. You know - the three R's." Needless to say, I lost it. Leave it to him to come up with the unexpected twist.
He is one of the most naturally funny kids that I have ever met.
I took Aleah (7) to the grocery store with me the other night to pick up a few things. She wanted to test-drive her new purse, complete with pen and notepad. "Do you have anything that you need me to write down, daddy?" I had to manufacture a couple of items as "reminders" while we were at the store.
On the way home, she suddenly said, "I have a great idea. I think they should make solar-powered cars. That way, we wouldn't have to pay for gas." I told her that I think they are working on that, and that it was a brilliant idea.
"I knew you would be pleased," she replied. What else could I say? Aleah speaks like she is 25 sometimes. Lest you think she heard of this somewhere else, I can virtually guarantee that she came up with this one on her own - she really is brilliant. In fact, I think she is probably far smarter than I am.
Abby, who is almost two and a half now, still pronounces "F" as "S" most of the time. When we were in Houston recently, we were eating lunch at the aquarium restaurant, and I was focused on the giant fishtank in front of us.
"Daddy, I has a nice. I has a nice, dad."
"What, honey? Ohhhhh....a knife." Nice, knife, same thing, right?
Here, honey, have a spoon instead.
For some reason, she is very interested in geography lately - "Daddy, I want Samoa." Samoa? Why would she want to travel to the South Pacific? I mean, I know that they have a lot of natural beauty, white sand beaches, and tropical drinks, but...ohhhh....you want "some more". Okay, sweetie.
Abby seems to be able to carry a tune very well, and she can sing along with the ever-popular "ABC" song, or the theme song from "Caillou", or pretty much any tune that she enjoys. What I like, though, is that she pulls an Ella Fitzgerald on the lyrics sometimes, just sort of inserting and removing words at will, or singing complete nonsense lyrics rather than the actual words. I think it shows immense creativity.
Many of her song creations would be hard to write down, but one stands out from her bath the other night. We have a kitten that, for whatever reason, LIKES getting wet sometimes. She is always jumping around near the bathtub when the kids are trying to bathe. Abby took care of it herself the other night, with this terrific song:
NO KITTY by Abby Crouch
To the tune of "London Bridges":
No nono no no no no
No no no
No no no
No nono no no no no
No no
Kitty.
I couldn't really add much to this one either.
Thanks for reading!

Way too cute!
Love the song... I think it's marketable... catchy, has a nice ring... has a nice beat you can dance to... I give it an 8.
O my goodness!! I love it. I have a 2 and a half year old and a 6 year old also, so I know exactly what you mean. They say the funniest things!! Too Cute!
Hi Jason, I love it. Just a note that ANNIE (the original with Carrol Bernette etc.) was my 15 YO's favorite as a child. Now she is so into musicals and was in Beauty and the Beast last year. With her talent and ability to adapt tunes, maybe Abby will be a musical star when she is older too. As for your little 25 YO she is going to go far in life my friend wait and see. Have a great week.
Jason...relish these simple times with them...They will be gone before you know it!
Kids have a unique perspective on life. It's great to see that you enjoy your children so much.
P.S. I can't wait for that solar powered car!
As a parent I can completely relate...my son used to say the strangest things and I would get a lot of dirty looks. He could never say crackers...he would always say crappers...when you are in the grocery store and your yells "Mom, I want some crappers" you really get wierd looks. He also used to call doughnuts, "dumbnuts" which gave me even dirtier looks when I would pass by the doughnuts in the grocery store..."Mom, I want some dumbnuts".
I love the solar powered car idea...wouldn't that be helpful to our wallets?
Kids are great.......I love the song!!!
Very cute Jason, what clever kids...and happy one's too. Could it be because they have such a great dad?
Jason, your children are a tribute to your own kindness, humor and good nature... they will be your forever legacy. Brandon is such a cutie too... we had lunch with him at your party and he was great!
Okay...Big B...(trying that one on for size)...I love hearing about my nieces and nephews! You made me smile and think of a few memorable quotes from my children also. I'll have to do a post with them one day. Your children are absolutely amazing! I'm so happy you show them off to us so much!!!
BTW...I'm saving the posts you sent me for a time when I can sit and read through them without interruption. I know they are going to rip my heart out.
GBU, Big B!
Jason: Now I just love that song. You are too young but Art Linkletter had the best show with young kids, I think it was called, Kids say the darndest things. I was just a small kid myself then. I think Bill Cosby came along with something similar many years back.
Children do say the darndest things and sometimes it's just pure brilliance and stark honesty. My three year old granddaughter told her 5 year old brother in the car the other day, wait 'til I get you home, I'll bop you in the head! Now, I surely hope she hasn't heard that from mom or dad which I am pretty certain she hasn't. Still I had to giggle just a little.
Very cute - sounds like you really enjoy being a Dad!
Jason, these are good days to cherish and remember forever. Kids are precious, and I agree they are smart too!
Jason I see a future for these kids- Comedy Central, inventor and song writer! Great stuff, Jason!
Kids do say the darndest things...:-) I just recently saw the Annie musical live...thats always fun...
Sir, I think that you are raising a song writer, a scientist and quite possibly a stand up comedian. Not sure but you can call it a hunch. One thing is for sure they are a real hoot.
Great lyrics, much better than in many of the songs out there right now! ~Rita
Jason, I love that I feel your love for your children with each word I read. Once they are grown and able to read this as adults...they will too.
Hugs,
Deb
Jason, you seem like such a great dad, the way you enjoy these sweet moments with your kids. From the gleem in your eye, I think they are helping to keep the 'imp' in you, too!
I think Brandon and I would get along great and I know that Abby is way too cool already. Aleah still reminds me of my niece named Sara. Sara kicks back and analyzes things before she jumps in and then she takes over with an unstoppable creativity.
Checking out the new Netflix feature of streaming! That sounds pretty cool!
In your face 'Smelly Cat'. 'No Kitty' is the new jam.
Hey, solar powered vehicles sound good to me. Kids still do say the darndest things. Nothing you ever do will provide you with as much satisfaction as raising your children and seeing them grow into well rounded, productive and contributing good citizens! Kids are pure honesty in action.
Jason,
It amazes me the things that kids say and come up with. This is one of my favorite things about being a dad. I love to hear/see the things my son does. He cracks me up! Well, I am fresh off a 8 day trip to Orlando and we had a blast. I plan on blogging on it soon. Its good to be back Raining!
Hey Jason, So, NOW we know where you really get all your cool material.. Thanks for sharing, God bless,
Jason... you and the brood are a riot. I laughed my behind off at the she pulls an Ella Fitzgerald on the lyrics sometimes comment. That's hilarious. I'm gonna have to check out that streamaing thing from Netflix too.
It must be the feline theme, but "No Kitty" reminded me of the Smelly Cat song the Phoebe on Friends used to sing.
You kids sound absolutely great and from your posts about them I can tell that you are an absolutlely wonderful dad. Not having any of my own, I enjoy hearing about other people's children, so please keep sharing!
It certainly is refreshing to hear kids' thoughts and ideas. It really provides a whole new perspective on things in general....often times what we would consider out-of-the-box thinking.
I must admit, being a Dad is probably one of the best things I have ever done..and I have only been doing it for 16 weeks!
J...I see the desire to pour yourelf into your kids. This is what I live for. This is so cool. My 9 year old would rather hang with me and play football with me than with his friends. I pour so much into my kids as a true dad that it makes it just awesome. Here's 2 songs for you. ONe for sons and one for daughters. Never heard the daughter song til I posted this, but it's now my daughter, Claire, and mine theme song.
Sons...Being a Dad can be tough!
Daughters Only one shot at raising your daughter.....
You sound like you've got some great kids! Enjoy every minute! Reading this was an instant pick-me-up!
My step sons are Cian and Colin. It's great reading about your family. Aleah sounds a lot like my Abigail.
Have a great weekend.
