It SNOWED in Austin last night!

I realize that many of you reading this will not find the idea of snow appealing or noteworthy, but my two older children have only seen snow ONCE in their lives.  Keep in mind that my son will soon turn 10 years old.

I have never seen snow this early in the season before.  I think every other time that it has snowed (at least in my memory) it was in January or February.  The last snow which accumulated here was on Valentine's Day about five years ago.

Unfortunately, it didn't really "stick" very much at all, but it was beautiful to watch it coming down for about an hour or so last night.  I got a picture as proof (see below).  Actually, I got several, but since it was dark, this is as good as any of them:

I was sincerely hoping for some accumulation, but it didn't happen this time.  Maybe we'll have a white Christmas for the first time in my life?  As a native Texan, nothing is more elusive or interesting that snow on Christmas day.

Thanks for reading!  Have a great week!

Congrats on the SNOW!  I was in Vermont this weekend where it snowed 11 inches on Sunday night -lots of early season snow.

LISA - This was really more of a light dusting of snow, frankly, but it was still fun to watch and think about!

Jason, I heard about that on the news today. The temps dropped like 40 degress in one day! Snow is so exciting when you are not used to it~

Jason:  No snow up here in the Fort Worth area.  It would be so nice to have a White Christmas... but I am guessing we'll have to turn to television for that.  Take care... thanks for sharing... and have a Merry Christmas.

I've live in a few different places in my life, and I've seen snow in all of them...Los Angeles! Tucson! San Jose! It's never stuck in any of those places, but it did snow. But, I've also lived in Alaska and am now in Colorado. Lately I've had to 4 wheel it to get out of the drive...my next place of residence??? Austin.

The 'Austin snow of 2008' was a pretty hot (or cool) topic last night on Twitter. Looks like there were some pretty big flakes. I think you got the best of it -- nice to watch it come down, and you didn't have to shovel it in the morning!

Posted by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace) over 3 years ago

I'm with you on that one.  I've been waiting for (well let's just say it's north of 40) years for it to snow at my house.  It almost happened one year.  The kids and I just pretend that the hail we get every two or three years is actually snow.  If we really want to have a snowball fight we have get in the car and drive up to the mountains. I'm glad you all got to enjoy it.

GINGER - It was sincerely 78 degrees at lunch, then a breeze blew in, then a little rain, then the temps dropped big-time and we had snow AND sleet last night.  Crazy day!

KAREN ANNE - So good to see you.  I hope you're doing well.  Merry Christmas to you, my friend.  I think I noticed that you have had some recent health issues?  I hope everything is okay.

MARIANNE - Are you looking to move to Austin?  I could probably find you a great real estate broker to work with!  :-)

JOHN - Great point!  It was really beautiful and fluffy-looking.

So Jason,  what does the fact it is extra cold and early snow (we're supposed to get it here south of Seattle this weekend) mean about global warming?

Jason - I think it's great that you get excited when it snows. Born and raised in Minnesota we get plenty of snow, but now living in Las Vegas (not)!

I was in Cedar City last Sunday and me and my wife took a 20 minute drive up a winding road and came across some snow. It was wonderful, so I snapped some photographs and here is one I would like to share with you. I hope you have a White Christmas!

Yah, we Texans get excited about it until it comes down a few inches thick, ices the roads and then not a one of the "natives" knows how to drive on the stuff.  That's we really hate it.

You know there's snow in Dallas when you turn on the local radio traffic report and it starts out with "Police have reported over 600 accidents by 7:00  this morning  . . . "

Snow really is not that exciting.  It was in grade school when you got off, but when you get older it really is not.  It becomes another inconvenience.

Jason,

Being from San Antonio I was 17 before I ever saw snow and then I was in North Carolina, so I can relate.  I hope that you guys have a white Christmas too.

Jason, it snowed about like what you had up here in Burleson as well. I remember about 3 years agon Port Aransas got about 2 inches of snow on Christmas day! It had never snowed there. Amazing..we can only hope for a white Christmas!

yeah... I can help you a little with that snow, too... up here in Chicago... in fact, I have more snow stuck to my dog, when he comes in from the yard, than you got... period.

I hear that New Orleans is supposed to get some snow today.  That should be epic.

Wow, TCT!  That's quite a special event for your part of the world.  I'm glad your children got to see the snow falling.  It's such a pretty sight.  Just be thankful you don't have to go out and shovel the sidewalks and driveway before you can move the car.  LOL  There are downsides to that pretty stuff.

When there was a freak snow in LA quite a few years ago, nobody knew what it really was.  However, you did see about half the popluation out in the yard trying to snort it!

(Its a joke, folks.  Put away the weapons.)      :-)

Jason - I heard from someone on Twitter that it was snowing there.  My kids were hoping it would snow here, but that didnt happen.  And now we are suppose to be up to 75 by Sunday, so Im sure its not in the near future.  Perhaps it will snow in February again.

I just can't get into the Xmas mood until there is snow on the ground.  The stores start with Xmas almost before Halloween.  I won't be fooled.  Xmas is when there is snow on the ground.

It's beautiful Jason, really just beautiful.  I love snow and living in central Georgia I guess I see maybe even less of it than you do.  We had some really good accumlation of snow in February of 1973.  We were on the warm side of that system that reached all the way over to Texas and we got over 4 inches of rain.  I wish for snow this year, but I'm not counting on it.

Hey Jason,

We had snow here in Baton Rouge, too, a big one!  Woke up to 3 inches.  Doubt it will last until Christmas, but it got many folks into the holiday spirit here.  As a native Texan...Abilene...we seldom saw a white Christmas.  And snow is even more rare here in Louisiana

A snow like that would shut down my area for three days. One day in anticipation of it, one day when it actually happens, and the third day to "get back in order" everything that was messed up on day one and two!

Yes, Jason, haven't I mentioned that before? Any moment now will do...we're expecting more snow on Sat/Sun. Actually I am interested, however, I need to be here for a couple more years. Then I'd like to get a winter place in the hill country.

Jason - I remember how exciting it was as a kid to see unusaul snow like that in Southern California. Our youngest's first snowman took every speck of snow to make, and ended up surrounded by nothing but green when complete.

One of the reasons we love Austin is that we aren't suppose to get this stuff. We moved away from this stuff, and we don't want to shovel or scrape anything ever again!  Thankgoodness it only lasted about an hour.

Jason, you beat us to the snow in Redding, CA. That's okay by me. I do love the snow and having lived in the Sierras....we did love our snow storms. They only lasted 1 to 2 days. We were at 3000 feet and it was perfect. We are now at sea level and rarely see snow. Enjoy! It's always a bit of a miracle.

Ah Jason.....coming from Montana, I've had my fair share of snow....and I lived in New York for a year! But you will love this one....when I was at the University of Houston back in the 80's, I had left my car with my roommate and flew home to MT. When I came back, it was warmer in Montana than Houston, there was 5 or 6 inches of snow on the ground, and my room mate would not come get me at the airport. Do you know what a cab ride from Hobby to Clear Lake City costs?

Make it a plan, even tho you like to be at home for Christmas and take them someplace so they can see some real snow! The memory will last a lifetime!
