As I have shared repeatedly here, my kids have a knack for making me laugh. The Christmas season is no different, of course. I just wanted to share a few of the humorous things that they said this year.
Abby is two and a half years old now, and she is a natural performer. Several times lately, she has appeared on top of the ottoman in our living room, or perhaps behind the puppet stage upstairs, proclaiming, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WELCOME TO DA SHOW!" When I then ask her to perform, she seems to be out of ideas, but she will sing if prompted a little.
Abby actually loves to sing, and my wife still swears that she heard her harmonizing to a song a few weeks ago. It would not surprise me.
In fact, over the past month or so, Abby has developed her own very special rendition of "Jingle Bells":
Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Nobody has ANYthing, Yes and all the way.
I guess she takes after her father, since I am notorious for making up different lyrics to popular songs (please see these previous posts for more on that topic: Why do I have so much trouble with song lyrics? More about my "lazy ear syndrome" and MORE song stuff - Am I hard of hearing? My Lazy Ear Syndrome).
My son, Brandon, made me laugh pretty hard with some of his Christmas commentary. Two days ago, he said this to me:
"Dad, I really hope it's not foggy this Christmas Eve. Otherwise, we might have to call Rudolph. Who knows if he's even still alive? If he is, he has to be in his 40's by now!"
To those of you who say, "life begins at 40", apparently my son would beg to differ with you.
Last night, as I was putting the kids to bed, Brandon mentioned an interesting idea:
"Hey dad, you know how they have Elvis impersonators? There should be Santa impersonators, too. In fact, what if Santa sang songs and Elvis came to your house with presents?"
Actually, that would jazz up the holidays a bit, wouldn't it?
When he was five, my wife took Brandon shopping at a local mall, and there was a Santa there taking pictures with the kids. To understand how funny this is, you must know that we never pretended that Santa was real or really talked about it very much, since we wanted to be able to always tell our kids the truth. This stemmed partially from the fact that my wife was traumatized as a kid by someone who lied to her telling her that she was going to see Big Bird on a TV while she was having a medical procedure.
At any rate, when Brandon finally met "Santa", he said, "I think you're real." Santa replied, "Well, of course I am. What would I be if I weren't real?"
"A puppet."
Enough said.
Sometime soon, when I get sufficiently motivated, I will share some photos of our special day together today. In the meantime, I hope that you had a terrific Christmas.
May God bless you richly in the upcoming year! Thanks so much for reading.

It's nice to have children, they say the cutest things.
Ho Ho Ho,
It's the kids who make Christmas glow.
Yours sound adorable.
You should write these cute things down in a book, so you can ALWAYS remember them....I wish I would have! Merry Christmas...
Jason- My holiday wish for you - May you never lose the absolute delight, you take in your children.
I love hearing about your kids. My youngest are 12 and they don't say many funny things anymore. It sounds like you had a great Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Nothing like Christmas morning with my wife and 3 kids...6, 9 and 12.
Kids say the darnedest things
That is too cute. I have a 3 & 4 year old and they are always saying the craziest things. You have inspired me to start writing them down. Thanks for the laugh!

As Art Linkletter said.....kids say the darndest things! (it was Art Linkletter, wasn't it? I think my grandmother had that book). It will be fun to see your photos.
Christmas just isn't Christmas without kids around! I never lied about Santa either to my kids---but always told them that THE IDEA of Santa was real...and we always started off the season with the story and celebration of Saint. Nicholas Day (Dec 6th), that was the true story about Santa, bringing gifts for children...Merry Christmas to you and your wonderful family!
Those are some good ones Jason! It is amazing how much perspective kids give us, and not to mention some good laughs. Can't wait to see the pictures. Sounds like Santa was good to you!
Merry Christmas Jason.........funny and refreshing! One of my past careers was in teaching, I taught music at a Greek boarding school in upstate New York. The strange part of the story is that I don't know any Greek and had to teach the hymns to the children phonetically. Even though I didn't know all of the translations all worked out fine!
Kids do say the darndest things...and yes, it was Art Linkletter who said it. In fact, he used to have a TV show with kids featuring things they would say...I'm dating myself now. Anyway, continue enjoying your children, as I'm sure you will!
Always funny to hear what will come out of a childs mouth, their perspective and way of putting the simplest things is so refreshing and funny.
Jason - I always chuckle to hear how kids reference "old", then again we had an assistant who was talking on the phone to a friend about a "guy" she had met and according to her old was 25! She and the guy had nothing in common LOL. Sigh. ~Rita
My day was filled with big gasps from my two year old. Followed up with "Oh my gosh" as he opened every gift. Priceless.
Jason:)Merry Christmas to you and your family. The treasures your kids bring you today will be etched forever in our hearts. Thanks for sharing the fun of your kids with us.
Jason....enjoy these times. Mine are grown, but I remember so of the funny things they come up with!
Dude....my kids prayed for the 40s. In face my kicw wer out sledding at 0% today. We went out and gave reindeer food last night. My 3 year old was most excited about the Thomas the Train underwear more than any of his toys.
Very sweet Jason! Merry Christmas!
Jason, those are some classics!
Thanks for the laugh! I hope you had a Merry Christmas!
LARRY - The "40's" comment was referring to Rudolph's AGE, not the temperature!
Jason, Very Cute. I just dropped by to wish you a Merry Christmas. My parents came in for Christmas and my Mom overheard a little girl in the plane talking to her Mom as they were taking off. The Mom said we are going up in to the sky, the little girls response was "are we going to heaven?
Jason - your children are living proof that God has provided the human race with a constant reminder to have balance in all things - hence the light hearted, unabashedly honest comments.
God bless you and yours!
Jason...OMG....that Rudolph in his 40's cracked me up! Tell your son for me (or for you as a parent) my Mother had WAY more to worry about me in my 40's than she did in my 20's....and we'll just leave it at that!
Kids are too funny with what they come up with. We still laugh at how my oldest son (now 19) was convinced he saw Santa one year when he got up to go potty during the night. We actually had to tell him the truth when he was in middle school, and he was devastated!
I think my son (4) also has the show-biz bug... He gets through "Ladies and Gentlemen"... but never really gets to the show part. He was on a stage in NOLA and started shouting it out... and then freaked a little when people started looking at him...
LOL, Jason, "A puppet"~ got to love it! Blessings to you and yours at Christmas & for the New Year!
At any rate, when Brandon finally met "Santa", he said, "I think you're real." Santa replied, "Well, of course I am. What would I be if I weren't real?"
"A puppet."
Enough said.
Hahaha. That's pretty sharp for a five year old. :)
P.S. Please don't tell him that I'm 54 (older than Rudolph)!
I like the idea of the Santa impersonators, hmmm wonder how many of them will be needed? And to have Elvis come to the house instead of Santa, that's even better.
Glad you had a very Merry Christmas my friend.
Sounds like you had a great day with your family Jason. I look forward to your pictures, and to your posts to come in 2009!
Good to learn from our kids -- they makes us laugh with the wonderful way they look at the world. I think this keeps us young! Enjoy.
Jason - It sounds like your little Abby is going to be a superstar. Thank you for sharing your children's moments and comments. thay are so cute.
Elvis impersonators... what a concept. Where do kids get these ideas?
Out of the mouths of babes..... (comes oatmeal).
My two and half year old daughter, Elissa, has been singing Christmas songs as of late as well....
The line she says that cracks me up the most and may be the most pointed is from Santa Clause Is Coming To Town:
"He knows if you been bad or good so be bad for goodness sake"!
I've asked a couple of times if this was right and she is CERTAIN of it...boy, I think I'm in trouble as she grows up!
Jason - My husband and his sister felt betrayed when they found out that Santa wasn't real... We didn't want to lie to our kids, so we told them the truth about Santa (and the Easter Bunny)... :)
Jason, the best moments for Christmas are the unrehearsed, impromptu ones. They actaully create the wonderful and sometimes hilarious moments in our memories.
Keep them near and dear.
Bo
Jason- Your children sound wonderful! I bet the holidays are never dull with them around. What sweethearts!
Jason - As always your kids crack me up. Keep posting the great things they say, they're entertaining to me, so I can assume that you have a blast with them.
Jason, I get amazed at how many parents actually miss moments like this in the childrens lives. The bad thing is, it is not because they are not around. It is because they do not listen.
Jason, your love and devotion to family makes you real people and people like real! Happy New Year to you and your family from me and mine:)
Jason,
Thank you for sharing. I love reading your kids thoughts because they sound familiar.
My oldest son, when he was 3 years old, used to say, froggy instead of foggy, "Mommy, is it going to be froggy outside today?". Our holiday was wonderful. Everyday I am more and more amazed at the keen awareness of my kids.
Untainted minds....a wonderful thing.
Jason,
Enjoyed reading your post. As they say, kids say the darnedest things. It sure is a precious time in life to have little ones.

Jason, I swear your kids are an absolute Hoot! Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi Jason...A big thank you to you and your wife for ensuring that we will have many years filled with clever quotes from your children.
Now can they come up with a good marketing plan for me?
Hope it's not too late to wish you all Merry Christmas.
Kate
My son used to call Santa - 'Santa Sauce.' To this day I still call him 'Santa Sauce.'
Jason, Thanks for sharing your stories. Kids are what make the holidays special. Wishing you and your family all the best for the new year.
Some of our best laughs are things the kids say.......I really have to start writing them down!!
Ahhh Kids keep us humble and laughing. Closed a deal on Tuesday, will fund I think on Monday. Hope you had a Merry Christmas as well. I know God has lots in store for all of us this 2009. Lets do lunch soon.
Alan
You can't put a price on the memories that kids provide.
Great stuff and thinks for sharing!
All the best in 2009 to you and yours.
Kids do say the funniest things. I hope you had a great Christmas and best wishes in the New Year!
Jason, Hope you had a Merry Christmas, children certainly have a way of bringing smiles to our faces. Thanks for sharing. Elvis has left the North Pole... :-) Happy New Year.
Jason-I enjoyed the sayings of your kids. Kids are so cute and can cheer you up when you are feeling bad. My three grandchildren keep me laughing. They are really funny too. Thanks for sharing this and I am looking forward to the pictures.
I love what kids say at these ages! My 6 yr old was so cute Christmas Eve...he ran upstairs hoping he didn't skip our house and as he ran upstairs he stopped and said " Did you hear that?" thinking it was Santa...so cute!
This is hysterical. I remember in college my roommate singing two tunes that were seriously botched up. Instead of Huey's I wanna new drug, he'd sing (believing it to be the true words), "I wanna new truck." Then instead of Hold the Line by Toto, he (seriously again) sing, "Mow the Lawn." We couldn't stop laughing. My kids do this all the time. Nice post bro.
